The Royal Melbourne Show

We love our annual trip to the show and this year didn’t disappoint. There is so much to see an do. Entering from the carpark, we hit the animal nursery first up. Who can resist? Baby goats galore and vying to get into your cup of chaff.

You can get up close and see, pat and feed hundreds of farm animals at the Show’s expansive animal precincts and attractions. Try your hand at sheep shearing and milking cows in The Farmhouse, or planting your own herbs. Our kids adored the pat a Pig in here too. The Animal Farmyard outside next door has your favourite farm animals roaming their paddocks as they would on the farm. There is lots of rustic machinery here which the kids think is great.

The Livestock pavilion drew a few funny comments from the older boys. Who knew male sheep had such big… wool! And even the Spotlight Makers Pavilion was a hit. The cake decorating is amazing and there is a junior section which showed some serious talent. We did some fun craft activities here and chatted with some of the makers.

The daily The Freestyle Motocross Stunt Show was a hit with the kids in the Herald Sun arena and a welcome time for the parents to sit and have a coffee for 30min.

Of course there is a host of carnival fun to be had. Rides galore and the Showbag pavilion (yes the kids nagged all day to get there). I dare you to time how long you spend inside, there are literally hundreds to choose from covering sports, novelty and of course candy and chocolates. I got an obligatory Bertie Beetle showbag for just $2 whilst the kids nabbed some nasty sour lolly goodness!

The Winning Tastes Pavilion (home of the Masterchef set) is hosting some of Melbourne’s best eateries and Australia’s most acclaimed chefs and producers (Mamasita had a pop up the day we visited), whilst a huge variety of mouth-watering cuisines from around the world are available in the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion. The Winning Tastes Courtyard is a total hit for more adult skewed food and drinks. Recently voted Australia’s best burger, The Royale Brothers (brought to you by Pantry Brighton) are serving up their famous burgers. Grab the kids a ‘Pony Boy’ and treat yourself to the ‘Royale With Cheese’, mama’s favourite! Make sure you grab a glass of Wolf of The Willows India Saison to wash it down, one of our favourite Bayside brewers. They will be serving daily from 10am – 8pm Oct 1-3.

Unfortunately we missed the dog pavilion, but make sure you check out the coveted Best In Show on Saturday.  Whether you love beagles or border collies, dachshunds or dalmatians, everyone’s favourite pooches are on display.

And of course if you haven’t got too many littlies in tow, we also recommend you hang around for the Nightly Fireworks Spectacular.
