You might be excused for not hearing the rumbling tummy of 1 child, but a report released this week by Foodbank reveals 1 in 5 children in Australia are going hungry each year. That’s almost half a million rumbling tummies.
Every day there are people in our community dealing with the anguish and despair of not knowing where the next meal will come from for themselves and their families. Foodbank works tirelessly with its many partners across the food and grocery sector to provide food for 183,000 meals a day to over 2,400 charities to ensure all Australians have access to food no matter what their circumstances.
Their new report also reveals the following:
- 1 in 3 parents living in food insecure homes say their children go hungry at least once a month.
- At least once a week, 18% of children from food insecure homes go to school without eating breakfast, 15% go to school without a packed lunch or lunch money and 11% go to bed without eating dinner.
- This is in spite of parents doing a lot to protect their children with 36% skipping meals so their children can eat and 29% going a whole day without eating at all.
- More than half (56%) of these parents have not paid bills in order to have enough money for food.
Don’t let their hunger go unheard.
Foodbank provides over 200,000 school breakfasts a week to over 1,750 schools and regularly supports Australian families in need, but they need your help to reach more rumbling tummies.
