Indulging in alcohol is undoubtedly an Aussie tradition when it comes to the holidays, but what about those who don’t drink, such as expectant or breastfeeding mums?

Holiday Drinking Habits

A survey by FebFast in 2015 found that a third of Aussies consume more than 10 standard drinks a week during the festive season.

A quarter of respondents admitted to spending between $200 and $1,000 on alcohol during December and January, with 7% saying they turned to alcohol in the festive season to help cope with their family.

Half of Aussies in the 20-29 age group admit to binge drinking during the Christmas/New year period, while the average alcohol consumption of once a week increases to three days a week during the festive period.

Sober Christmas

Unsurprisingly, those choosing to stay sober over Christmas and New Years can often feel left out having to forgo the grog, while those around them guzzle the bubbles.

However, alongside mums-to-be and those breastfeeding, many Aussies are attempting to be more mindful of their alcohol consumption post lockdown, suggesting that this Christmas will be a sober one for many!

Fret not mindful-drinkers – your holidays can still be full of bubbly and delicious cocktails thanks to the abundance of alcohol-free alternatives to beer, wine and spirits available online.
