How to get inspired to refresh your kid’s bedroom

Blink and before you know it your little bundle of joy isn’t so small anymore. As they grow, kids like to remind us that they’re big now, and the first change is often their bedroom! Whether they’ve outgrown their cute animal theme, or prefer yellow to blue now, it can be sad to bid farewell to decor and memories of your child’s younger years. Plus, the time and money spent on a makeover to keep up with their interests can be daunting. Whether they want to add some colour, or create a more ‘adult’ space, giving their bedroom a makeover can be easily done on a budget. Here’s a helpful guide to get you started!

Get your child involved

The best place to start is with your kiddo. Getting their opinion is important – it’s their space after all! As much as you need to act as a practical voice, you can also get input into what they want to see. Ask them things like:

  • What are your hobbies?
  • Do you have a specific colour or theme in mind?
  • Do you want to create zones? For example, one corner can have a desk and chair and be the study/art zone.
  • Do you want a specific feature, like a photo wall or posters?

From there, you can take their ideas and put them into motion. Sometimes it might be as easy as a quilt cover and bedding refresh, others may require a little more time and effort. Take note of their answers and make a budget to stick to.

Make a plan

This goes without saying – but planning will help bring your kid’s ideas to life. After you’ve gotten their input, it’s time to turn it into reality. Sometimes it can be useful to break a big makeover into little steps, especially if you can’t finish everything in a single weekend.

Everyone’s plans will look different, depending on what kind of makeover you’re undertaking. However, there are a few handy tips to keep in mind.

If you’re moving furniture, try and do a basic sketch of where it will go before you actually move it. There’s nothing worse than finally getting that big cupboard to move, and then realising you hate where it sits now!

Next, plan what shops you want to visit, when, and in what order. You’d be amazed at how much shopping you can accomplish on a weekend if you plan out your trip.

Choose a colour scheme

As your child’s favourite colour may change when they’re older (or even every other day), it may be hard for them to make a choice for their walls. Neutral colours like whites, tans, greys, and light blues can provide a base tone as your child’s favourite colour and décor tastes inevitably change as they get older.

Add pops of bold colours by assigning one wall to be a feature with wall stickers or decals, or through quilt sets, rugs, curtains, framed art, and even storage containers and furniture.

Don’t forget storage

With all the books, games, jewellery, and other knick-knacks they’ve accumulated, your child’s going to need something to put them in. Storage furniture is important to consider when giving their bedroom a makeover. Little items can be stored in baskets, boxes, containers or even a blanket box near the bed.

If you’re completely re-doing the room to include new furniture, look for practical solutions. This could include a bed with built-in storage, or even a bunk bed with a desk or cupboard underneath!

Shop at home as well as in stores

You’d be amazed at the amount of things you already have at home that can be moved around or repurposed. This will save you money and shopping time, which is especially helpful if some of the other furniture or items you bought for the makeover cost a little more than you expected.

Any lamps, rugs or even a bookshelf in another room or home office that aren’t being used can be included as “new” pieces for the makeover. If you have too many leftover jars or containers in the kitchen, repurpose them as storage containers for your child’s bedroom.

Install wall shelves

Wall shelves are another storage option to consider for your child’s knick-knacks and books, or to display their school and sports awards. Wall shelves are also budget-friendly and easy to put up, plus you can install multiple shelves on the walls if you need the storage space.

Brighten up the room with a change of lighting

You might not have thought about changing the lighting as part of the makeover, but it can be an easy and creative way to literally light up your child’s bedroom.

This doesn’t mean hiring an electrician to rewire the lighting in the bedroom. Instead, make simple changes like buying decorative glass and/or colourful light shades, or projector night lights if your child would like to sleep in their own set of stars or galaxy. These changes are budget and DIY-friendly for both you and your child.

Making over your kid’s room should be fun and exciting! These tips will help guide you through the process so you can create a space they truly love!
