Space Craft and Stop Motion Animation

In this family-friendly activity participants will be introduced to stop motion animation and make their own short film using the iStopMotion App.

Get an introduction to storyboarding and create a papercraft film set, then bring your story to life using characters and stop motion animation techniques, while drawing draw inspiration from our Space collection.

This family-friendly activity is designed to encourage conversations between young learners and adults that establish a framework for learning to continue at home. Participants can take their papercraft set and characters home, along with a digital copy of their film.

Recommended for ages 5+. Children must be accompanied by an adult

Minecraft Galaxy Workshop

In this workshop, young participants will be guided through Minecraft activities and games before changing into ‘creative mode’ to design their own Minecraft creation inspired by the Powerhouse Space exhibit.

This workshop series uses Minecraft Education Edition, a game-based learning platform that promotes creativity, collaboration and problem-solving in an immersive digital environment. The Minecraft world used in this workshop is safe, private and accessible only at Powerhouse. 

Participants will be provided with computers for use during the workshop. Please bring a packed lunch and hat (as lunchtime activities may take place outdoors).

Shooting Star Storytelling with ScratchJr

In this short family-friendly workshop participants will learn to code and create their own interactive stories using ScratchJr — an introductory programming language developed by the Scratch Foundation in collaboration with the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab.

Young participants will be introduced to coding as they learn how to make their characters move, jump, dance, and sing. They can also customise each character’s colours and add their own voices and sounds.

This family-friendly workshop is designed to encourage conversations between young learners and adults that establish a framework for learning to continue at home.

Learn the basics of coding in the C# language to program your own version of Space Defenders, a twist on the classic computer game.

Green Screen Galaxies and Neon Galaxy in the Design Studio

A free, family-friendly, drop-in activity where participants are encouraged to make space-themed craft creations and then turn them into the stars of their own video.

Be inspired by our Space exhibit as you play with colourful craft materials to build rockets and aliens. Then extend the fun by making your craft creations the stars of a video, produced using an iPad and green screen technology to depict a galaxy of your imagination.

On daily, 2–17 July 2022, at Powerhouse Ultimo in the Design Studio — the museum’s new family-friendly, interactive space. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Across the Galaxy Game Design

In this workshop, young participants will be introduced to the basics of digital game design using Unity.

Building their own multi-level game, participants will learn various design concepts to make their games fun and challenging, while drawing inspiration from our Space exhibit.

This workshop uses Unity — a free, professional game development software engine. Young participants will be able to take files home at the end of the workshop to continue building their games.

Space Robots with Code-a-pillar and mBot

In this short, family-friendly, workshop participants will be introduced to the basics of robotics coding using Code-a-pillar and mBot — educational tools that make programming simple and fun.

Each Code-a-pillar and mBot has a range of motors and sensors that can be programmed using block-based coding. Young participants will complete a series of challenges to customise their robot while developing their logical and computational thinking skills. Participants will be encouraged to draw inspiration from space exploration robots, such as the Mars rovers.
