Following the success of last year’s inaugural competition, The Cat Protection Society of Victoria is again inviting budding authors to showcase their storytelling and enter the Furry Tales Children’s Story competition, with the winning entry to be turned into a picture book.
Writing enthusiasts, young and old, are invited to showcase their creativity and create a story, aimed at pre-schoolers aged 3-4 years, that helps to raise the profile of cats as pets, and educate pre-school aged children on responsible pet ownership. This story will then be incorporated into the Societies community outreach activity in kindergartens, pre-schools and local libraries.
“We were absolutely overwhelmed with the stories that came flooding in last year, and can’t wait to once again read some incredible stories about the different ways that cats have impacted peoples’ lives,” says Rachel Bitzilis, Marketing and Communications Manager, The Cat Protection Society of Victoria.
“At the Society, we know the incredible star power of cats, so are looking forward to seeing the stories come to life,” she adds.
Entries can be focussed on a cat who has found themselves seeking refuge at the Society’s adoption shelter, about a cat who is adopted into their purrfect forever home, about the challenges faced by a cat living on the street without a home to call its own, about a beloved family cat, or a cat that has had a profound impact on someone’s life.
Both children and adults are encouraged to enter the writing competition, and entries will be judged by a kindergarten teacher and a representative from the Society.
Stories need to be aimed at pre-school aged children, and the winning story will be turned into a children’s Picture Book that will be available for purchase next year via the Society’s retail and online stores. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go towards continuing to provide the highest levels of care and the rehoming of cats and kittens in need.
The winning author will receive a $150 Gift Card, a certificate and a private shelter tour with plenty of time for cat and kitten cuddling with three friends.
The Furry Tales Children’s Story Competition opens on Tuesday 30th August, with winners announced in early November.
Last year’s book featured two winning stories; The Very Best of Friends by Sue Moossajee, a primary school teacher, and A Cat’s Story by Adelaide Hogan, a young girl with dyslexia. The picture book is still available for purchase for $29.95 from https://www.catprotection.com.au/product/furrytales
