10 fun facts about Winter babies and why they are really the best!

If you’re due to give birth this Winter or you already have yourself a Winter baby, the following fun facts are sure to spark your interest.

1. Birthstone

Babies born in July have the most stunning birthstone of all, ruby. According to the American Gem Society, it’s believed to promote courage and energy, heighten awareness, and bring success in wealth and love.

2. Bigger and taller

Scientists at Harvard and at the University of Queensland found that children born in Winter were longer, and that at age seven, were taller, heavier and had larger head circumferences than their peers.

3. Better behaved

A study at Queensland University found that Winter-born children were better behaved. They conducted a study of children from 4-5 years around a range of things like consideration of others to how much they fidget.

4. Often left handed

A study by the U.K. website Anything Left-Handed found a higher number of left-handed people born in Winter, while research from the University of Oxford found that babies born between March and July are more likely to be left-handed.

5. A born leader

A child born in the month of July could follow a path toward leadership, much like Julius Caesar, the warrior and ruler for whom the month was named.

6. They crawl earlier

A 2014 study found that babies born in Winter start crawling earlier compared to babies born in the Summer. Possibly because of seasonal differences (like temperature) that occur around 30 weeks, when babies begin to crawl.

7. More likely to be born premature

Babies due in Winter are as much as 10 percent more likely to be born early. One reason is due to flu season being at its peak, and contracting the flu whilst pregnant can cause complications to your baby.

8. Smarter

Scientists at both Harvard and Queensland Universities monitored the development of 21,000 boys and girls, and their research found children born during Winter had higher scores in a series of intelligence exercises than their peers.

9. Prone to food allergies

A report in the Journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology that looked at children brought into Boston emergency rooms with food-related allergic reactions found a much larger number were born in Winter compared to Summer or Spring.

10. Easier pregnancy!

The best fact of all is that mum doesn’t have to go through the heat of Summer while 8-9 months pregnant. Definitely winning there!
