Honey has been used medicinally for over 4000 years in ancient Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Roman cultures. It has proven to be a powerful ingredient that has been used for a variety of ailments, from healing wounds to helping to improve gastrointestinal health and now it is being incorporated into skincare.

While Manuka honey has long been thought to be the holy grail of honey, a WA based father of two, Lloyd Jones has spent a number of years investigating the medicinal benefits of the local apia honey produced by the Jarrah and Marri trees and started to explore this avenue as a possible topical source.

He even trained to become a beekeeper and ultimately made a skincare product for his daughters and his friends to help improve their skin conditions. It worked so well that he has since created both a honey range and a skincare range using the potent type of honey.

Benefits of using honey for your skin.

Lloyd Jones shares the top benefits of using honey for your skin.

Medicinal

While we can’t make too many claims on any natural ingredient, there is a tonne of research that has shown honey to be a great natural solution for people with skin issues such as eczema due to its anti bacterial and anti fungal properties. Honey is also a known antioxidant and inflammatory that has been shown through research published by the Mayo Clinic to assist in the healing of wounds such as burns. Therefore it makes sense that incorporating it into skincare would provide numerous benefits for the health of your skin.

Honey may speed up cell rejuvenation

According to Healthline, honey may speed up the healing process of skin cells due to its anti inflammatory properties. Additionally as honey is antibacterial and anti septic nature, it may also be beneficial for oily or acne prone skin.

Highly moistursing

Honey is a natural humectant which means that it can hold moisture without making your skin feel oily. It also contains hydroxy acid which can help to gently exfoliate and brighten the skin.

May help to reduce the appearance of fine lines

The hygroscopic properties of honey may help to detox your dermal tissues. This in turn will help to improve the tone and texture of your skin which can help to reduce fine lines.

What type of honey should you use

Not all honey is created equal. In fact some commercial honeys have been stripped of their beneficial ingredients through the process it goes through between when it is harvested to when it is bottled. That is why special types of honey, such as Manuka, are often mentioned.

While Manuka is a great source, there is a type of honey based found in WA that is even more potent. apia honey is produced by the Jarrah and Marri trees that are native to the pristine areas in WA including in national parks, state forests and private farm land.

The levels of enzymes measured in the honey from these trees by independent scientists have shown higher antibacterial qualities that any other honey source. It also has proven to have higher levels of hydrogen peroxide which is one of the powerful healing properties that is found in honey. I chose to work with apia honey for this reason and have since trained to become a bee keeper and have set up my own hives.

Keep apia honey from the Marri and Jarrah trees in mind when you are next purchasing honey or honey based skincare.

About Lloyd Jones

WA based father of two, Lloyd Jones has created the ultimate skincare solution while researching a natural alternative to treating his two young daughters skin conditions.

As a new father, Lloyd was unsettled by all of the steroid creams and prescription ointments that his girls were prescribed so he set out for a more natural and sustainable solution.

Growing up in the pristine natural environment of WA, Lloyd was familiar with the medicinal benefits of the local honey produced by the Jarrah and Marri trees and started to explore this avenue as a possible topical source. He even trained to become a beekeeper.

From there he began creating his own balms and wellness products using Jarrah and Mairi honey as the main ingredient to try and sooth their skin in a natural and more sustainable way. After seeing successful results on his daughters and close friends, his brand apia honey was born in 2020.
